Fairways Cafe opens at Shiskine Clubhouse

11/4/2015

All of us around Blackwaterfoot have been very pleased to see the return of full cafe facilities at the Shiskine Golf Clubhouse.

New owners, Sara and Simon, have made their entrance by rebranding the former 'Felicitys' into the 'Fairways'. Some rather splendid cakes are available, along with snacks, main courses and of course great teas and coffee.

Enjoy the Beach or stroll to the Caves

Walking from Kings Cave to Blackwaterfoot
We're probably biased, but the beach at Blackwaterfoot is one of the best you'll find on the Isle of Arran. Constantly changing in appearance, and it has something for everyone, in all weathers and all seasons.

For those who enjoy a modest walk, the King's Caves are within easy reach along the well marked and signed path taking you above and around the rear of 'The Doon'.

Plenty of tables at Fairways and comfy Sofas too.
I'm sure all on Arran will join me in wishing the team all the best with their new venture.

Black Forest Scones to die for . . .

Janie's Tea Room in Brodick

Yes that's right 'Black Forest' and 'Scone'. Couldn't quite believe it ourselves, but the combination is truly something to experience at the welcoming and very friendly 'Janie's Tea Room' just outside Brodick next to Arran Aromatics.

Served warm, with a choice of clotted cream, butter or jam, these are very special, so much so that we went back for a second to share! Coffee there is lovely too. Fresh, nicely prepared with decaf 'proper' available for those of that persuasion.

The area outside the main tea room is also 'dog friendly', a rare find on Arran and much appreciated on this late January day.

With other shops within the area, this is the perfect destination after an amble along 'Fishermans Walk' from Brodick (access from the car park behind the 'small' Co-op) but do watch out for high tides as the route will be blocked.

Our Lunch at Arran's Cafe Thyme

29/8/2014

cafe tyme arranCafe Thyme, The Old Byre Showroom, Arran Ceramics
Looking for somewhere bright and cheerful to eat on Arran? Somewhere that cares about the food that it produces and is happy to provide great facilities for the younger ones?

Although we are no longer accompanied by small children, it’s clear that the ones belonging to other visitors of Cafe Thyme are having a splendid time on the various outdoor activities which help to make this a great place to occupy a couple of hours. The sun is shining this lunchtime in late August. The sky is blue and the air is warm.

We opt to take advantage of the small terrace, and sit in two of the contemporary bistro chairs with matching table. We are greeted shortly by Lorna with a smile, bearing the drinks and food menus. One of their USP’s is the fairly uncommon but delightful Pides (pronounced Peedees), a Turkish style of pizza baked in a wood fired oven by Hamza the chef. Vegetarians are well catered for here, and being so inclined I choose a Spinach, Garlic and Mushroom Pide (£8.50), which has the added attraction of an egg on top - something I'm always attracted to! My accompanying drink is a small glass of Australian Chardonnay (£3.75).

Jacqueline is obviously in the mood to experience the exotic and selects the Poached Scottish Lobster Salad (£14.95) along with a small glass (it is lunchtime) of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc Semillon (£3.75).

We have time to take in the wonderful scene which surrounds us, from the uninterrupted view across the sea to Kintyre mainland and closer, to the colours of Scottish heather carpeting the brae which rises behind us.

Our food is delivered by a man in crisp ‘whites’ and it looks wonderful. My Pide comes with a fresh bowl of dressed salad, is piping hot from the oven and is as enjoyable to eat as it looks; a sort of widened ‘Canadian canoe’ if not quite as large. Flatbreads are placed alongside the beautifully cooked Lobster which sits elegantly within its white bowl, surrounded by a fresh salad. Jacqui enjoys every mouthful.

We finish with coffee and a smile.

It was a wonderful lunch. The ingredients are fresh, they are prepared with care and the result is a meal presented with genuine pride in the knowledge of a job well done.

The cafe opened in June 2012 and now seats up to 40 people. Located up a short track off the A841 on the west coast of Arran, the cafe shares its position with The Old Byre Showroom and Arran Ceramics.

September Coffee Magic at ‘Felicity’s’

6/9/2013

Come 'fika' with me

Picture
September sunshine with a fresh sea breeze is a great pickmeup and the best place to be is sitting on the cafe terrace at Felicity’s, two dogs with sandy salty fur collapsed at our feet. With hands wrapped around a cup of fresh coffee, and scones straight from the oven with jam and cream, I watch waves rear and foam on the blue green sea across the golf course. A carefully chosen table means the wind is kept in check, and there are always the cosy sofas inside.
In Sweden, the institution of coffee breaks both morning and afternoon (that’s two scones or maybe the boozy brandy tiffin the second time) has been around since the 1700s. It’s called fika and it’s imperative that you go with a friend, take your time, drink coffee and have something sweet... I’m sold. I’ve decided this is probably one of the greatest secrets to a happier life and so needs to be given the respect, and time, it deserves! It also sounds like a perfect pastime for an Autumn holiday here on Arran.

JH.

Felicity’s is open until mid November and overlooks the beach at Blackwaterfoot.
